Comics I am Reading- New Warriors #1

I am starting a new section of this blog. It is "Comics I am Reading". I will be giving my review of different comics I am reading.

Some background Info:

The New Warriors is the latest incarnation of this hero group. The original New Warriors premiered in 1989 in an issue of Thor. It was a group of young teenage Marvel heroes. It had a Teen Titans feel to it. I thoroughly enjoyed the first run of this comic series.

This group was involved with the starting Marvel’s Civil War. The following is from Wikipedia about Marvel's Civil War.

"The New Warriors members (Night Thrasher, Namorita, Speedball, and Microbe) battle a group of villains (Cobalt Man, Speedfreek, Coldheart, Nitro) in Stamford, Connecticut while filming a reality television show. Nitro explodes, killing more than 600 people (including school children and all of the New Warriors except Speedball). The rest of the superheroes appear in Stamford to search for survivors." (Wiki)

"Public opinion turns against superhumans. Even the inactive members of the New Warriors are branded as "baby killers". Hindsight Lad (desperate to distance himself from the team) releases their secret identities online, and several are attacked. (The She-Hulk shuts down the site, and he is arrested by John Jameson.) Angry civilians attack the Human Torch outside of a club." (Wiki)

"Guided by Iron Man, Congress quickly passes the Superhuman Registration Act [9] (SHRA), 6 U.S.C. S. 558, requiring the registration of all persons with superhuman abilities with the U.S. government, and the enlistment and training of those wishing to operate as superheroes. The law applies to those with naturally-occurring superhuman abilities, those with abilities acquired through science or magic (including extraterrestrials and gods), and non-super powered humans using exotic technology, (such as Iron Man). Enactment of the federal law led to revisions of state criminal codes (such as Chapter 40, Article 120, Section 120 of the New York Penal Code, and Section 245(d) of the California Penal Code). [10]" (Wiki)

Now on to the current issue of New Warriors #1. The general story has two arcs that cross at the end of the issue. The first arc is about secret heroes capturing bad guys in the cover of darkness. No one knows who is bringing in the bad guys. They then leave the message that the New Warriors are back. This is puzzling since the majority of the team is supposed to be dead.

The other arc is about a former mutant, Sophia. We get to peak into her very normal life since she lost her powers. She is being recruited by a mysterious group to join in their fight against the Hero Registration.

The art work is very sharp and detailed. It is visually appealing. Its structure flows easily. I loved the art work in this book.

The writing made the story engrossing. It was a great balance of the story arcs and combining them in the end. It exhibited good character development. Reading issue #1 was a wonderful experience.

This comic is rated "T" for Teen but not for any graphic content.

I brought a lot of high expectations to this new series. The first issue went beyond those expectations. Grade: A+

This is the best comicbook issue I have read all year.

These have been a few geeky thoughts of my complex mind.
